Dutch survivors
Approximately one third of the Jews who were taken from the Netherlands were killed in Sobibor. Between March and July 1943 nineteen transports left from Westerbork to Sobibor. Most of the 34,313 deportees were gassed immediately upon arrival. A few hundred prisoners were selected to work in the camp or in neighbouring camps. Nearly all of them died of starvation, exhaustion or ill treatment. Only eighteen Sobibor survivors who were originally transported from the Netherlands returned home: three men and fifteen women. Two of them, Selma Wijnberg and Ursula Stern, were actually prisoners in Sobibor, the others spent a few hours in the camp before being put to work in the surrounding area.
