Biography:
Jules Schelvis (Amsterdam, 7 January 1921) and his wife and in-laws were transported from Westerbork on 1 June, 1943. He took along his guitar "as a welcome distraction to keep your thoughts elsewhere". Upon arrival in Sobibor he managed to attach himself at the last moment to a group of men who had been selected to work in the turf camp Dorohucza. Jules Schelvis is one of the 18 Dutch Jews who survived Sobibor.
