What does Sobiborinterviews.nl have to offer?

The core of this website consists of thirteen interviews with survivors of the uprising on 14 October 1943 in the Sobibor extermination camp. In addition there are interviews with two Polish locals and one survivor of the uprising in the crematorium of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The interviews, varying in length from ten minutes to two hours, are divided into segments. In each segment the interviewee talks about one or more events. These events are nominated in the brief descriptions of the segments. Using a simple search engine you can search these descriptions of the segments.

Collaborating organizations

The website Sobiborinterviews.nl is a publication of the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (NIOD). The site was developed by De Ree Archiefsystemen.

The interviews shown on this site were originally recorded in 1983 and 1984 by Jules Schelvis (a Sobibor survivor) and Dunya Breur (†2009) on VHS videotapes. A subsidy from the Heritage of the War programme of the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport made digitization of these video recordings and the development of this website possible.

The majority of the images are courtesy of the collections of the United States Holocaust Museum, The Ghetto Fighters’ House and the personal archive of Jules Schelvis.

The image of the tower between the coniferous trees was borrowed from the cover of Richard Rashke’s book “Ontsnapping uit Sobibor” (Escape from Sobibor), which was published by publishing company In den Toren. The cover was designed by Peter Koch in 1984.
